The CrystalEdge® UV7000 Series is a thin-bodied (low viscosity) optically clear UV Cured Adhesive specifically developed for bonding thermoplastic materials (plastics and acrylics) to glass, stone products, and metal. It produces stable, flexible and crystal clear bonds with minimal cure time. It is used for bonding plastics and acrylics to each other, or plastics and acrylics to the smooth impervious surfaces of glass, granite, marble or most metals. It is unique in its optical clarity and its resistance to yellowing. This adhesive has a good resistance to moisture. UV7000 has the ability to allow for the expansion from different bonding materials without loss of adhesion.
We recommend that for all materials, or material combinations, you conduct your own destructive tests. The variables such as surface finish, material types to be bonded, gap thickness, joint cleanliness, and UV curing lamp performance all have a direct affect on the strength of the finished bonded product.
### Material Types That Can Be Bonded
- Plastics and Acrylics (PC, PET, PVC, ABS, PMMA)
- **NOT SUITABLE** for PE and PP type Plastics
- Plastics and Acrylics to Glass
- Plastics and Acrylics to Granite and Marble
- Plastics and Acrylics to Metal (smooth surfaces)
### Surface Requirements
For optimum bond strength results, all acrylic, glass, stone or metal surfaces should be machined or polished. Products that are hand finished often have an irregular surface, however the Low Viscosity UV7000 Adhesive will successfully fill most voids caused by irregular surfaces.
All surfaces should be cleaned thoroughly with rubbing alcohol before bonding. We do not recommend glass cleaner as many contain silicones that can decrease bond strength. Isopropyl Alcohol of a 90% concentration (obtainable at most drug stores) seems to work the best. Apply a liberal amount of the alcohol with either a cotton cloth or a paper towel and allow both surfaces to evaporate the alcohol.
### Adhesive Application
UV7000 Adhesive should be evenly applied to one surface of either piece to be bonded. Typically the adhesive should be applied to the vertical pieces by running a bead of adhesive along the center of the surface that is to be bonded. The use of a special needle applicator will simplify this task and more accurately allow the adhesive to be positioned on the surface. When an even bead of adhesive (the size of the bead will depend on the area to be bonded) has been applied the two pieces should be positioned, then pressure applied to the joint. Sufficient pressure is needed to ensure that the adhesive covers the entire joint area. If there are voids in the adhesive due to irregular surfaces, more adhesive should be applied.
### Adhesive Curing
Once the adhesive has fully covered the area to be bonded, and no voids or bubbles are present, the adhesive can be cured using the same Ultra Violet (UV) lamps that you now use for other UV cured adhesives such as our own UV9000 and UV8000 series. Depending on the type of UV lamp and output power, the UV7000 adhesive curing time will range from 20 seconds to 4 minutes or more. We suggest that you experiment with your current UV lamps to find the optimum curing time for the type of joint being bonded. For more information on our new high power UV Curing Lamps, visit crystaledge.com. You will require a sign in code and password as the lamps are in the “members only” secure section of the website under **Accessory Products**.
### Adhesive Clean Up
One of the most important benefits gained by the use of UV7000 adhesive is the reduced clean up time versus other low and medium viscosity adhesives. Another major improvement with this new adhesive is that any excess adhesive that remains outside the bond joint area will remain liquid longer and can literally be wiped off with a paper towel soaked with a little glass cleaner. The excess adhesive will only start to harden if the piece is left under the UV lamp source for a long time (usually more than 5 minutes). Under normal curing times (2-3 minutes) the excess adhesive will remain liquid, however the bond joint is fully cured.
